Plastic it is everywhere on the streets,in our houses and even in our beautiful oceans. It must stop now! Plastic causes serious damage to the environment and human health.Its not just the final product that is harmful but the processes we use to make it are also bad for health and the environment . Now here are some reasons why plastic is bad.
When we make plastic it can take up to 5 litres of water just to make one bottle . The heating up of the ingredients releases nasty chemicals into the air which can cause cancer in humans. When we try to get rid of plastic by burning it, the plastic releases methane which is not only harmful but is a big problem with global warming. Plastic breaks down very slowly ; releasing poisonous chemicals into the ground which gets into our mighty rivers and oceans. When plastic is recycled it has to go and make a lower quality plastic so we always have to replace the original. Whichever way we look at it ;when we make , us or get rid of plastic. It's no good.
Did you know 9 billion i repeat 9 billion ton of waste is dumped into our oceans each year. Thats atrocious! Our awesome marine mammals, fish, birds and reptiles can become tangled up in plastic and get seriously injured. Lost nets continue to catch fish and mammals gut now they do it by accident and the animal die slowly. This is called ghost fishing and it destroys breeding populations.
Why don't we use alternative products or think before we use plastic? Reuse your plastic bags. Take them back to the store each time you shop and you will be on the right track. It would be better to use cotton bags not nylon or polyester because they are also made of plastic. When you buy your shopping buy products in boxes not bottles. Cardboard can be recycled more easily and it can be made into more products. Reuse the glass or plastic jars that your marmalade comes in. Store things like jam in them. Instead of always taking the easy option stop and think; do I need this, can I reuse this?
So to recap, plastic is harmful when we make it, use it or dispose of it. Our extraordinary animals die slowly an get seriously injured and there are many great other products that we can use. Remember to also recycle and put your plastic in the bin
